Restaurant 2018 award win for third year.

Torquay and its surrounding villages have undergone a huge upgrade and are now winning award after award for quality accommodation, cuisine, and generally fine tourism.

Gone long are the days of the kiss-me-quick, and slot machine freaks everywhere, replaced with decent, good old-fashioned tourism of the kind our parents would have, and did, enjoy. And I can assure – no sign of Fawlty  Towers anywhere.

Adding to its impressive array of awards and recommendations, Maidencombe’s family-owned and run Orestone Manor, has scooped for the third consecutive year, an enviable Gold restaurant win in the highly competitive, 2018 Taste of the West Food and Drink Awards.

Our Good Holiday expert testers have twice visited and find it getting better and better every time. We loved the family-run, Devon gem, led by husband and wife executive chefs, Neil and Catherine D’Allen, son Craig and his wife Laura, who all  are thrilled with the judges’ recognition of their passion for food and fine dining. And all delicious dishes are from locally-sourced, Devon produce.

The Taste of the West judges were effusive in their praise of the Orestone’s kitchen and restaurant-led by talented head chef, Daryl Sharpe, saying it showed a “clear and strong commitment to local sourcing with very knowledgeable and welcoming staff” and provided “an exceptional level of service.”

Exquisite rooms and decor

The triple-year gold restaurant win comes at a serendipitous time for Orestone Manor; as well as existing awards and recommendations from Conde Nast Johansens, Trip Advisors’ Hall of Fame and double AA Rosettes for fine dining; recipes from Orestone’s award-winning restaurant have been chosen to feature alongside those from the south west’s finest establishments in a stunning recipe book looking at what it takes to serve the South West’s best loved, signature dishes.

Being specially chosen for Relish South West Second Helping, Orestone takes its place among other award-winning eateries across the South West, ranging from Ston Easton Park nr Bath to Port Isaac’s Nathan Outlaw.

Family-owner and Orestone Executive Chef, Neil D’Allen said: ‘It’s a delight to hear about our gold selection in the Taste of the West Awards – it’s something that speaks volumes for our highly-skilled team, the incredible array of delicious south-Devon food we source and what we strive to do with every dish we serve.’

‘Our passion for food is everything you’d expect in a hotel owned by my wife, and I – two trained chefs. With an emphasis on modern European food, our mission is the food we serve balances wonderful ingredients deliciously cooked, allowing the favour of the South Devon region to shine. This Taste of the West Gold restaurant award-win is testament to this.’

‘Being based in this idyllic part of South Devon, we are blessed with some of the country’s finest and freshest produce available, be it delicious vegetables tied to the season, South Devon beef, West Country free range pork and lamb, local estate wild game, delicious Brixham Crab, hand-dived Torbay scallops and lobsters, dayboat fish, rope grown mussels – it’s simply incredible what’s on our doorstep, be it from the Devon land or the watery seaside larder that sits on our doorstep.

Thanks to the expert skills of our talented kitchen team and the staggering choices this wonderful Devon location provides, means we keep creating award-winning dishes, that delight judges and guests alike.’
