If you dream of earning while you explore here’s a warning to travellers not to let unexpected mobile phone charges ruin the experience.
Jessie Chambers from Global Work & Travel, says: “Even switching on your phone on landing can lead to huge roaming bills if you haven’t changed your settings. A few background apps using data without you realising can cost you hundreds before you’ve even unpacked.”
Since the UK left the EU, roaming charges have returned in full force for many; without an EU cap in place, UK mobile networks can now set their own fees, and some are charging as much as £7.75 per MB. Here’s a breakdown:
Sending a short video on WhatsApp (5MB): £38.75 at £7.75 per MB
Posting an Instagram story with video (8MB): £62
Using Google Maps for an hour (approx. 20MB): £155
iCloud or Google Photos auto-backup (can use 100MB+): £775+ if roaming is left on by mistake
These figures are based on the highest rates charged by UK providers in destinations not covered by inclusive roaming. Exact charges depend on your network and location. Destinations with high roaming risks include:
Switzerland , Turkey, USA, Canada, Morocco, UAE, and parts of Latin America – known for eye-watering default rates
Some travellers have returned home to bills exceeding £1,000, simply for leaving data switched on while working or travelling abroad.
You must turn off Data Roaming pre flying and stick to Wi-Fi and use trusted networks in cafes, hostels and accommodation. Avoid open public networks.
