Yosemite in California heads the top 20 list as the most popular but dangerous selfie hotspots in the world with more than 4,869,100 hashtags on Instagram
The Grand Canyon (4,267,800 hashtags) and Wales’s Snowdon (1,576,589) follow as the world’s most dangerous selfie hotspots
New research shows that 48% of us pick holiday destinations based on the number of photo opportunities, with some 53% being willing to walk a beach at low tide for a selfie – despite the risks
Selfie-related deaths over the last few years were investigated by a top casinos group to see which popular selfie hotspots tourists are most likely to be betting on their lives with. Two year’s news articles on incidents from minor injury to death showed that some of the biggest tourist hotspots were the most dangerous selfie spots.
- With a whopping 4,869,100 posts on Instagram Yosemite is the most popular dangerous selfie hotspot with 5 million visits a year and over 1,000 have died from slipping to their death in selfie attempts gone wrong.
- Second place is the Grand Canyon with 4,267,800 Instagram posts and is estimated to be the cause of 12 deaths each year.
- Third is Snowdon in Wales with 1,576,589 posts and many fewer annual deaths. With the most recent death reported in September, visitors much watch their footing as falls are the main cause of injury and death.
- Europe is equally beautiful and dangerous with Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia, whose 16 lakes and waterfalls get many accidents, including deaths, from 986,915 In 2016 mountain rescuers pleaded with tourists to stop taking “stupid and dangerous selfies” after completing 1,200 rescue operations and with scores falling to their deaths.

5th: Cliffs of Moher – 641,247
6th: Loch Lomond – 491, 707
7th: Brecon Beacons – 392, 381
8th: New Smyrna – 365, 647
9th: Cabo da Roc – 286,190
10th: Pamplona – 214,000
Mount Everest and Lulworth Cove are 12th and 13th because many have injured themselves after taking on daredevil selfie challenges.
In 14th place is Mount Kilauea in Hawaii with 139,018 posts, followed by Clifton Suspension Bridge in the UK (89,400) and Mount Merapi (75,103) in Indonesia.
Despite its beautiful views, that wasn’t enough to stop Yungas Road also known as Death Road making the list (56,474). It holds the title of the world’s most dangerous road – rightly so as its narrow and winding track is often overloaded with trucks and overcrowded buses, accompanied with slick rainforest roads and heavy rain and fog.
Completing the top 20 list are Huashan National Park in China (41,111), Diamond Bay Reserve in Australia (33,722) and Northcliff Hill in South Africa (23,609).
